Bettylou’s story is one of undeniable talent, determination, and a deep connection to the ocean. Growing up on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, she spent her early years mastering the challenging waves of Haleiwa, where her natural ability and fearless approach quickly set her apart. At just 16 years old, Bettylou cemented her place in surfing history by winning the 2021 Michelob ULTRA Pure Gold Haleiwa Challenger, not only earning a spot on the Championship Tour (CT) but also solidifying her reputation as the “Queen of Haleiwa.” Competing against her idol, five-time World Champion Carissa Moore, Bettylou showed that her future as a world-class athlete was destined from the start.
Bettylou’s meteoric rise began even earlier. At 13, she won her first Pro Junior and Qualifying Series events in Papara, Tahiti, showcasing an ability to perform under pressure against older, more seasoned competitors. By the time she joined the CT in 2022, her path was shaped not only by her own grit and fearlessness but also by mentorship from surfing legends like Ross Williams, John John Florence, and Kelly Slater. Despite her youth, Bettylou has already proven her mastery over some of the world’s most intimidating waves, including Pipeline, where her iconic semifinal heat during the 2024 Lexus Pipe Pro made history.
For Bettylou, surfing is not just about competition—it’s a lifestyle intertwined with conservation. She views her role as a professional surfer as an opportunity to advocate for ocean protection, emphasizing the responsibility that comes with calling the world’s most iconic waves her “office.” A passionate supporter of the World Surf League’s (WSL) One Ocean initiative, Bettylou is particularly dedicated to protecting her home in Hawaii.
During the Pipeline competition, she worked alongside Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii, a decade-long WSL partner focused on inspiring communities to care for their coastlines through beach cleanups, education, and advocacy. For Bettylou, supporting efforts like these is part of her mission to ensure future generations can enjoy the same pristine beaches and waves that have shaped her journey. She believes conservation must include everyone and advocates for inclusive, community-driven approaches to protect coastlines worldwide. Whether in the water or through partnerships with grassroots organizations, she’s using her massive platform to inspire others to respect and protect the ocean—a cause as central to her identity as surfing itself.
