The Third Annual Hack for the Sea

A Marine Science Hackathon about Coastal Watersheds, Blowholes, Eelgrass, Cod Spawning, and more.

We are pleased to announce that the data sets and challenge statements for the 3rd Annual Hack for the Sea are available at https://hackforthesea.tech. This is an independent event, organized by Mark Robert Henderson. “It was originally an event to promote my tech consultancy. The consultancy isn’t around anymore, but I still do Hack for the Sea because I love the event and the subject matter.” says Henderson. The event will take place between Sept 21-23 at the American Legion and Gloucester, MA. All are welcome – all skill sets, all ages, all walks of life.

All of the technology from the event is open source and goes directly to the “Beneficiaries,” a class of organizations that, this year, include Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc. (CUAHSI), the Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI), The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, Ocean Alliance, and the MassBays National Estuary Program.

“One of our goals this year is to be a bit of an anti-hackathon.” says Henderson. “Other such events are intellectual property grabs, or recruiting events, or both. Here we tell people – bring whatever prior work you want, make your work impactful to our beneficiaries, and make sure it’s open source.”

If you can’t make the event, you have two options: sponsor a ticket for somebody who might not be able to afford one[1], or learn more about the Marine Hacker Sandbox[2], world-class cyberinfrastructure support for marine science projects.
