At The Island School and the Cape Eleuthera Institute (CEI), we believe in the power of immersive learning and hands-on experience to inspire the next generation of environmental leaders. Interns live, learn, and work in South Eleuthera alongside a diverse community of scientists, educators, students, and professionals united by a shared commitment to sustainability.

The role

Internships are available in five areas: Marine Research & Conservation, Sustainable Agriculture, Sustainable Systems, Divemaster, and Communications. Interns must be at least 19 years old at the time of their internship program. Internship opportunities may vary based on active projects.

The Marine Research & Conservation Internship: work alongside experienced scientists and conservationists on projects ranging from coral reef restoration to sustainable fisheries management and marine biodiversity monitoring, actively participating in field research, data collection, and analysis. Open to college students and recent graduates with a passion for environmental science, research, and sustainability.

The Divemaster Internship: a hands-on professional development opportunity for individuals pursuing leadership-level training in recreational scuba diving. Interns work closely with the Diving Operations team to support daily dive activities, training programs, and student experiences while completing (or building toward) PADI Divemaster certification requirements.

The Communications Internship: act as a photographer, videographer, and designer to create videos, blog posts, social media content, and newsletters that showcase research, education, and community initiatives. Photo and/or video experience preferred.

The Sustainable Agriculture and Sustainable Systems Internships: organic farming, agroecology research and community food security work; and the design, operation, and maintenance of the campus’s renewable energy, biodiesel, rainwater harvesting and solar well pumping systems.

Responsibilities

• Marine Research & Conservation: participate in fieldwork, wet lab experiments, and dry lab sample analysis; work across research themes like coral reef restoration, sustainable fisheries, and coastal ecology.
• Divemaster: assist instructors with scuba training programs, including DSDs, Open Water, and continuing education courses; support student divers with equipment setup, briefings, and in-water supervision; participate in dive planning, logistics, and safety procedures; assist with gear maintenance and boat operations under supervision.
• Communications: create content across digital platforms; help manage social media channels; support events and outreach efforts.
• All CEI research teams spend at least two days each week focused on teaching, in the classroom and in the field, with students of all ages.

Salary and benefits

Room and board at no cost to accepted candidates. Interns live in shared dormitory-style accommodation on campus (Anderson Cabot Grad Hall), with internet access and three meals a day in the dining hall. The Island School covers visa fees, airport transfers from Rock Sound Airport (RSD), training, and professional development. Based on program-specific schedules and available resources, interns may have the opportunity to experience snorkeling, scuba diving, community engagement, and island exploration.

Location and schedule

The Island School and Cape Eleuthera Institute campus, Cape Eleuthera, South Eleuthera, The Bahamas. Spring 2027 session runs 10 January to 15 May 2027. Summer 2027 and Fall 2027 sessions open for applications in February and April 2027 respectively.
