Description

The University of Southampton is hiring a full-time, fixed-term Research Fellow in Marine Ecology at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton, paying £36,636 to £38,784 per annum through 31 October 2028, with applications closing 11:59 pm UK time on Monday 8 June 2026.

The position is funded by the NERC C-FLOOR highlight topic and offers a unique opportunity to investigate how physical disturbance, specifically bottom trawling, influences the capacity of marine sediments to act as net sources or sinks of carbon, nutrients, and greenhouse gases.

Under the direction of Prof Martin Solan and Prof Jasmin Godbold, the Research Fellow takes a central role in the NERC-funded project and engages actively with partner institutions across the UK to ensure integrated project outcomes.


Responsibilities

  • Lead a series of manipulative laboratory experiments and field surveys using sediment profile imaging technology.
  • Link changes in carbon, nutrient stoichiometry, and greenhouse gas dynamics with the effects of trawl gears, fishing intensity, sediment types, species composition, and seasonal timing.
  • Engage with partner institutions across the UK to support integrated project outcomes.
  • Lead dissemination of novel findings through high-impact, peer-reviewed academic publications.
  • Continuously develop advanced technical skills and research competencies within a world-class marine science environment.

Requirements

  • PhD (or equivalent) in Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, or a closely related discipline by the start date.
  • Strong background in benthic invertebrate community ecology.
  • Experience with laboratory experiments, image analysis, and interpretation of complex ecological data.
  • Proven track record in written and oral communication skills.
  • Commitment to collaborative, team-based science.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working at sea.

  • Offers are subject to subsequent completion of an ENG1 or equivalent medical.
