Description
Turtle Island Restoration Network (TIRN) headquartered in California is a leading advocate for ocean protections and marine species protection.This is a six-month position, applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
TIRN is seeking an enthusiastic out-going person to advocate for the creation of the Cocos-Galapagos Swimway, see https://seaturtles.org/the-cocos-galapagos-swimway/ an aspirational bi-national no-take marine protected area that will connect the Cocos Island, Costa Rica and Galapagos Islands (Ecuador) National Parks.
Working alongside TIRNs Special Projects director, and policy and communications staff, the Ocean Advocate Intern will work to increase pressure on the government of Costa Rica to enact its portion of the MPA through increasing support of scientists, other NGOs, and the public through direct outreach, and social and earned media attention.
This position is ideal for those looking to gain hands-on experience in advocacy promoting environmental protection for sea turtles, sharks and the ocean habitat they depend on.
Intern Roles & Responsibilities
- This position requires ability to conduct phone and computer outreach and does not involve field work.
- Use of known strategies and additional creative thinking of ways to reach target audiences and promoting petitions, sign-on letters and action alerts.
- Maintaning records of outreach in various Xcel spreadsheets.
- Weekly meetings to discuss progress.
Qualifications & Skills
- English and Spanish proficiency
- Ability to use PC or Mac and phone for direct and internet communications
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and organize oneself
- Ability to project a positive image with the target communities
- Creative thinker and interest in helping to improve and develop new methods and ideas to accomplish goals

We offer residential internship positions at our headquarters in Olema, California with housing provided in a coed house, just five miles from our office. Residential interns work full time (40+ hours a week) for a minimum of six months. We require a four-year degree to qualify for this position. The value of housing calculates to about $900 per month.
