The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries seeks a Marine Fisheries Biologist I to coordinate the Fisheries Management Observer Program in Morehead City. This position contributes to sustainable marine resource management by supporting field operations, data management, and protected species compliance through the Protected Resources Program.


Description

Working as part of the Protected Resources Program, the Marine Fisheries Biologist I supports the Observer Program through supervision, data analysis, and compliance reporting. This role collaborates with stakeholders such as commercial fishers, seafood dealers, and interagency teams to refine sampling protocols, uphold permit obligations, and contribute to long-term fisheries conservation planning. The position requires strong communication, analytical, and leadership skills to ensure accurate scientific documentation and effective team coordination.


Responsibilities

  • Support and coordinate the Protected Resources Observer Program
  • Analyze and ensure quality of fisheries-dependent data
  • Serve as lead author on monthly reporting and contribute to annual reports
  • Supervise permanent and seasonal observer staff
  • Improve sampling protocols and ensure compliance with Section 10 permits
  • Represent the division on relevant committees and planning teams

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in wildlife/fisheries science, biology, or related field
  • At least 2 years of experience in wildlife or fisheries management
  • Knowledge of marine finfish and/or protected species
  • Experience in fisheries data collection and analysis
  • Proven skills in technical/scientific writing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience coordinating and supervising field or research teams
  • Familiarity with Incidental Take Permit reporting
  • Strong organizational and verbal communication abilities
  • Ability to engage with public stakeholders and cross-agency partners
