The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is hiring a Hatchery Preventative Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor in Lacey, Washington, at $6,107 to $7,082 per month, with applications due May 31, 2026.
WDFW’s Capital and Asset Management Program (CAMP) operates from the Lacey Construction Shop and supports agency facilities and assets statewide, including hatcheries critical to Washington’s salmon and steelhead programs. Team WDFW maintains the infrastructure that keeps fish on trucks and water flowing through hatcheries year-round.
The Hatchery Preventative Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor leads a team of skilled trades professionals responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing mechanical systems and equipment across WDFW facilities. The role pairs hands-on technical expertise with leadership, planning, and mentoring to keep agency assets safe and reliable.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and mentor technical and professional staff to foster a productive, motivated team environment.
- Develop and maintain Performance Development Plans (PDPs), position descriptions, and performance documentation; conduct timely evaluations and provide ongoing feedback.
- Address personnel matters including performance issues, conflict resolution, and absenteeism constructively.
- Lead staff development initiatives including cross-training and technical skill building.
- Supervise journey-level staff by scheduling, directing, and coordinating maintenance and repair of mechanical and automated systems.
- Prepare sketches, basic fabrication drawings, and as-builts to support field operations.
- Review conceptual and 30-60-90 drawings, identifying conflicts that would require adjustments or exemptions.
- Plan and coordinate projects by defining work sequences, staffing needs, material requirements, procurement specifications, and cost estimates.
- Conduct onsite assessments of equipment, components, and facility maintenance needs.
- Manage preventative maintenance schedules and budgets, ensuring accurate work order tracking and closeout.
- Manage assessment and preventative maintenance of fish hatchery production pumps (up to 300 HP), valves, manifolds, and flow meters.
- Change oil and filters in gear drives, vertical turbine pumps, motors, hydraulic systems, and similar mechanical systems.
- Inspect and evaluate residential and commercial plumbing components at hatchery facilities, including septic systems.
- Manage maintenance and diagnostics on crowders, rotating belt screens, electric rolling doors, winches, and predation prevention structures.
- Inspect electrical components and perform minor repairs.
Requirements
Candidates may qualify through one of three options (experience may be gained concurrently):
- Option 1: Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in at least two skilled trades, plus 2 years of direct mechanical maintenance experience, plus 1 year leading or supervising staff.
- Option 2: 2 years of experience as a Construction and Maintenance Project Lead in mechanical maintenance, plus 1 year leading or supervising staff.
- Option 3: 5 years of direct skilled experience in mechanical maintenance, plus 1 year leading or supervising staff.
In addition, candidates must demonstrate:
- Knowledge of construction methods, equipment, materials, costs, and sourcing.
- Understanding of contractual relationships, specifications, and fiscal procedures.
- Knowledge of engineering principles applied to construction.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting plans, specifications, blueprints, sketches, and shop drawings.
- Basic knowledge of hazardous building materials.
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel).
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of Washington State purchasing rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of Hydraulic Project Approval (HPA) permits.
Additional Notes
- Full-time, permanent position. Job number 2026-04184.
- Typical schedule: Monday through Thursday, 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM, 40 hours per week.
- Travel: 60 to 80 percent depending on season.
- Field conditions include extreme weather, rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes, and confined spaces.
- Frequent lifting up to 50 pounds; operation of motor vehicles in hazardous weather.
- Covered by a WFSE collective bargaining agreement.
