Animal Telemetry Postdoctoral Fellow

Salary: $69,923 per year


Position Summary:
The Smithsonian Institution seeks an energetic, field- and data-oriented biologist to support marine animal telemetry research focused on fish migrations in Chesapeake Bay. This full-time, one-year renewable position includes a comprehensive benefits package and is anticipated to be funded for two years. Occasional travel is required.

The fellow will contribute to field research and data analysis for a multi-species acoustic telemetry study examining fish and invertebrate ecology and connectivity.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead field research capturing and tagging three species (likely river herring, sheepshead, and Spanish mackerel).
  • Assist with data analysis for existing telemetry data from other species.
  • Engage in the Smithsonian-led Movement of Life initiative integrating telemetry with habitat restoration.
  • Contribute to long-term monitoring of fish and invertebrate communities in Chesapeake Bay.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Biology, Marine Science, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in animal telemetry research (preferred experience with acoustic telemetry of teleost fish).
  • Proficiency in data entry and management (preferred experience in acoustic telemetry data analysis using R).
  • Strong field research skills, including familiarity with tagging marine organisms.
  • Preparedness to work in challenging field conditions, including boat operations and extreme weather.
  • Experience engaging with diverse fisheries stakeholders is a plus.
