The Guy Harvey Foundation has trained over 100 Florida teachers in marine science education this year, supported by more than $60,000 from Florida Power & Light Company through the NextEra Energy Foundation. The funding milestone coincides with FPL’s 100th anniversary and represents a partnership that has been building ocean literacy in Florida classrooms since 2021.

The investment extends beyond teacher training. Each participating educator received classroom supplies and access to field trip grants, enabling them to take students directly into Florida’s marine environments. Ten field trip grants were awarded, offsetting travel expenses, substitute teacher costs, and stipends that often prevent schools from accessing hands-on environmental education.

“Thanks to companies like FPL, we can continue providing educational programming that empowers educators and inspires the next generation of marine conservationists,” said Jessica Harvey, CEO of the Guy Harvey Foundation.

The Guy Harvey Conservation Education program targets elementary, middle, and high school teachers across Florida, offering regional professional development in environmental Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education. Teachers who complete the training become Guy Harvey Conservation Educators, equipped with resources to foster environmental awareness in their classrooms.

FPL, as one of the Foundation’s earliest partners, has helped establish the program’s presence in Florida schools. The company serves approximately 12 million people across the state and operates one of the most fuel-efficient power generation fleets in the United States.

“Teachers play a vital role in shaping young minds and fostering curiosity about our natural world,” said Juliet Roulhac, senior director of external affairs for FPL and director of corporate philanthropy for NextEra Energy. “By investing in their classrooms and providing resources that bring marine science and conservation to life, we’re empowering students to explore careers in STEM while deepening their understanding of Florida’s unique ecosystems.”

The partnership addresses a critical gap in environmental education funding, particularly for Title I schools and districts where budget constraints often limit field-based learning opportunities. By covering the practical costs that prevent teacher participation, the program ensures broader access to quality marine science education.
