It is a yearly tradition of mine to go on a solo backpacking trip to discover a new land, culture, language, and immerse myself in a different corner of nature. Living in Thailand, within a few hours flight there are countless islands to dive, mountains to climb, and cities to get lost in. This year I chose Myanmar. It turned out to be one of the most majestic and beautiful trips so far. Below are some photos from where I started my trip near Yangon, Myanmar.
I chose this destination because a man who worked with my father for many years was from Myanmar. I was so curious to see where he came from and learn from his culture. I was lucky enough to have him accompany me on part of his trip.
Street markets in Kyauktan, outside of Yangon are like many others in southeast Asia, but with their own flare of spice, street food, local produce and crafts. Night markets just as well are where you can hang out and feel just like a local with some cold beer and grilled meats and vegetables.
You need an early ride from Yangon to see Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, one of Myanmar’s most iconic sights. About a five hour drive followed with a cable car ride to the top of the mountain, you arrive in the company of visitors from near and far. The views are spectacular and the site is like no where place on earth.
Whether tent camping, staying at the hotel, or driving in for the day, this is where you come to make a wish and hope for good fortune. Throw a coin, have someone forecast your future, or just take in the moment and appreciate the present.
