Tracking Global Progress Towards Target 3: (Re-)Introducing GD-PAME

The Protected Planet Initiative plays a central role in tracking global progress towards Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework — the commitment to protect 30% of land and sea by 2030. The World Database on Protected and Conserved Areas (WDPCA) provides the official global indicator of progress towards the coverage target, but coverage alone says little about whether protection is actually working. This webinar focuses on how effectiveness is tracked, spotlighting the Global Database on Protected Area Management Effectiveness (GD-PAME), hosted on protectedplanet.net alongside the WDPCA. UNEP-WCMC opens with a presentation on the origins and evolution of the GD-PAME. Speakers from the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy (Maldives); the Department of Wildlife Conservation (Sri Lanka); and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC, UK) then share their firsthand experience assessing the effectiveness of marine protected areas and reporting their findings to the global database. A live Q&A closes the session.
