Eight tips for a positive impact on the environment this summer.

It is summer and beach season for most of our readers north of the equator and we hope you are having a great time getting some sun and getting wet! I was answering some questions for friends about some simple things they could do this summer to make a positive impact on the environment. Figured I would pass on these couple tips!

friends enjoying summer

  1. It is hot out and you know you will need some water so fill a bottle at home before you head out. Better yet, get schools or local organizations to install filters or water coolers. We use a million bottles per minute and 91% of them are never recycled.
  2. If you plan on grilling be smart about the meat you buy. Local farms, small production, organic- you know the deal. You can also skip the meat and grab a veggie burger instead. Or an even more delicious idea, it is summer so take advantage of the fresh produce! Grilled corn, zucchini, eggplant, mushrooms, grilled peaches, romaine lettuce… have you tried grilled pizza? No one will miss the meat when a cookout is filled with mouthwatering options like that.
  3. Skip the dryer. Your carbon footprint and electricity bill will appreciate it.
  4. Use sunscreen that is oxybenzone free. Even if you think you live far away from a coral reef, your skincare choices will make a difference. Plus creating a demand for oxybenzone free lotions is just as important.
  5. Start to do your research on who is running for election in your local or national government and support those that have a proactive environmental plan. Your vote makes a difference
  6. Donate to organizations that educate like SEVENSEAS Media! Also organizations that research, that clean, that reforest.
  7. Buy innovative products that act as a solution to some of our problems. Disposable bags made from seaweed, edible single-use utensils, and paper plates made out of pressed corn husks are just a couple ideas that popped up on my Facebook feed this month. Give them a try! If we help create market for these products their prices and availability will match the demand.
  8. Inspire someone. Teach a little kid about marine life, let your neighbor know how it is easy and healthy to live green, or tell a highschooler how important it is for them to register to vote.

The solution starts at home and a better tomorrow starts right now.

Safe travels and happy swimming,
