Position Overview
The Stewardship Manager provides technical leadership and supports the Jack and Laura Dangermond Preserve through stewardship planning and execution. This includes land management strategies (e.g., prescribed fire, grazing, invasive species control), infrastructure maintenance, and collaborating with partners and scientists. The manager also supervises stewardship staff, contributes to restoration and science initiatives, and occasionally hosts donor tours and volunteer events.
This is a hybrid role. Candidates must commute to the Preserve at least twice weekly (additional days as needed).
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement preserve management plans.
- Lead land management strategies including fire, grazing, and invasive species control.
- Oversee infrastructure projects and critical ranch operations.
- Supervise stewardship staff and delegate responsibilities.
- Collaborate with science and restoration teams.
- Support public engagement through donor tours and volunteer events.
- Develop tools and strategies to support stewardship across other TNC preserves and neighboring lands.
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of experience in natural resource management or equivalent education/experience.
- Experience planning and managing projects with diverse stakeholders.
- Supervisory and leadership experience.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and web applications.
- Knowledge of land management principles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Multilingual and/or multicultural experience.
- Knowledge of conservation science and land management trends.
- Ability to communicate complex conservation concepts to a range of audiences.
- Skilled in independent time and task management.
Salary Information
- Annual salary range: $70,500 – $82,825
- Range applicable for positions located in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura Counties in California.
- Final offer depends on location, qualifications, and experience.
