
Department of Agriculture and Fisheries
Through execution of sound scientific research projects, provide advice for sustainable and equitable management of fishery resources in the Northern Territory. This position will be required to devise, plan and manage research projects that test alternative fishing gears to develop scientific advice that will inform key fisheries reforms, including in the NT Barramundi Fishery. Additionally, the position will require the provision of advice to administer harvest strategies within contemporary management frameworks.
Requirements
Essential:
- Degree in fisheries science or a related natural resource science.
- Proven skills and experience in conceiving, designing and managing research projects and staff in fisheries science as well as reporting research results in writing and verbally to the scientific community, technical and advisory committees, and the general public.
- Demonstrated experience in assisting fisheries managers with the development and administration of fisheries harvest strategies.
- Demonstrated competence and experience in the application of statistical analysis, including stock assessments, GIS, survey and or experimental design techniques including development and management of relatively complex databases for storage and handling of research information.
- Demonstrated programming skills in ‘R’ software or a similar programming language.
Desirable:
- Masters or PhD in fisheries science or a related field.
- Experience in designing or testing fishing gear and equipment in a research setting.
- Working knowledge and understanding of the fisheries, aquatic habitats and ecosystems of the Northern Territory, or the ability to acquire.
- Coxswain Certificate and First Aid Certificate or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of commencement.
Salary: $110,873 – $124,173
