Canadian Whale Institute

The Canadian Whale Institute is looking for a passionate individual to join our science team. CWI is a registered charity internationally known for its marine mammal science, entangled whale response, outreach and education with fishing and shipping industries, coastal communities, and government policymakers.

The ideal candidate will have completed a BSc in biology, marine biology, environmental sciences, or a related field and have a minimum of two years’ experience. A MSc is considered an asset. Marine mammal research activities will include preparations for and participation in monitoring surveys at sea on board small (< 10 meters in length, day trips) or larger vessels (17-20 meters in length, multi-day trips), daily processing of survey data, data management, and preparation of reports and publications.

The job will require the individual to represent the Canadian Whale Institute with colleagues, professional mariners, and the public at meetings, trade shows, association presentations, and scientific meetings and to uphold the reputation of the organization and its mission. This will include the development of relationships with potential project partners, participating in outreach events, and leading the development of outreach materials. The candidate must be willing to travel throughout Atlantic Canada and Quebec.

This position is full-time. Remote options are available in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, with a preference for the Halifax Region. Weekend work and scheduling flexibility are required, especially during periods of at-sea research. The salary will match the candidate’s experience/skills/education; benefits and two weeks’ vacation are provided.

Requirements

  • Prior at-sea experience (small and large vessels) studying large marine mammals, including marine mammal identification at sea.
  • Ability to work and communicate well at sea and in a range of weather conditions, able to follow directions and safety protocols.
  • Physically fit to execute the work of the position.
  • Excellent data management and computing skills including RStudio and Microsoft suite.
  • Detail-driven, team player with a strong task-oriented focus.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Research-oriented experience preparing proposals and reports.
  • Experience with drafting and maintaining protocols.
  • Ideally social media management experience.
  • Experience with digital photography and video.
  • We will only consider applicants who are already authorized to work in Canada.
  • Must have a valid passport and be able to travel through the United States to and from Campobello Island.

Location: Remote options in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia with a preference for the Halifax Region.
