Background

The IUCN European Regional Office (EURO) connects IUCN Members, Commissions, and stakeholders with EU institutions and other entities to promote biodiversity policies and the European Green Deal. Headquartered in Gland, Switzerland, IUCN is the world’s largest environmental network, with 1,400+ members and nearly 15,000 experts worldwide.

EURO seeks a Regional Coordinator, Nature Restoration to lead the organization’s nature restoration work in Europe. This is a strategic leadership role involving portfolio and people management, partnerships, fundraising, and coordination of EU-focused conservation efforts.


Job Description

Reporting to the Head of Programme and Policy and working closely with EURO staff and other IUCN offices, the Coordinator will oversee project delivery and contribute to policy development.


Key Responsibilities

1. Programme and Project Coordination & Team Management

  • Oversee nature restoration projects, ensuring delivery, monitoring, and budget execution.

  • Lead the European Nature Restoration team and manage external contracts.

  • Liaise with donors, national authorities, contractors, and project partners.

  • Coordinate with IUCN global and regional teams for integration and synergy.

2. Knowledge Generation

  • Support IUCN’s European Programme with emphasis on socio-economic and climate-related aspects of restoration.

  • Contribute to technical reports, standards, and policy documents.

  • Disseminate IUCN knowledge products and track emerging policy trends in Europe.

3. Strategic Partnerships and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build partnerships with national authorities, donors, and partners.

  • Lead fundraising efforts for European restoration programs.

  • Represent IUCN at events, advocate for nature-based solutions, and coordinate workshops and capacity-building efforts.

  • Identify communication opportunities and prepare relevant content.

Note: This role may require flexibility and additional duties beyond those listed as part of IUCN’s collaborative working environment.


Salary

Gross annual salary: EUR 75,000 to EUR 95,000 (dependent on skills, experience, and IUCN equity analysis). Subject to deductions for social security, health insurance, and applicable taxes.


Candidate Requirements

  • Strong alignment with IUCN’s mission.

  • Master’s degree in a relevant subject.

  • 10–15 years of professional experience, including 5+ years of international project and people management.

  • Experience in international development organizations, NGOs, or multilateral institutions.

  • Proven record in project development and implementation.

  • Familiarity with EU funding mechanisms and successful fundraising.

  • Understanding of socio-economic and climate dimensions of nature restoration.

  • Knowledge of EU biodiversity policy and global conservation frameworks.

  • Excellent written and verbal English communication; French or Spanish desirable.

  • Strategic thinking, leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

  • Ability to meet deadlines and travel as needed.
