
ANGARI Foundation
About the Position: ANGARI Foundation is seeking a full-time crew member who will fulfill first mate, deck, maintenance and engineering duties. The Foundation owns and operates a 2001 65-foot Grand Alaskan vessel R/V ANGARI that underwent a refit in 2016 to accommodate research and education expeditions. The vessel is designated an oceanographic research vessel by the U.S. Coast Guard and is equipped with indoor and outdoor laboratory and workspaces, a dive center, updated navigation electronics and safety equipment and accommodations for up to 7 scientists plus crew. The vessel is available for day and overnight charter to scientists, filmmakers and educators for expeditions. R/V ANGARI supports the Foundation’s hands-on education programs, which includes several daylong expeditions with middle and high school students onboard throughout the year. The crew member will be an integral part of daily operations onboard the vessel and work under the supervision of ANGARI Foundation’s President and Captain and the vessel’s Relief Captain and Engineer.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Maintenance and Engineering • CAT engine and Northern Lights generator maintenance, including sea strainers, zincs, oil changes, fluid checks, filter changes and minor services and repairs • Maintenance of vessel systems, such as water maker, hydraulics, A/C units, marine heads, air compressor, dive gear and safety equipment and gear • Regular checks of A/C filters, sea strainers, bilges and other systems • Tender maintenance (16′ Whaly 500R Pro w/ Yamaha outboard) • Keep engine room organized and clean at all times; paint touch-up as necessary • Assist Captain with spare parts lists and vessel maintenance schedules and logs • Exterior boat washing and bright work • Cleaning, sanding and oiling of teak cap rails as needed • Minor fiberglass repairs • Cleaning of waterline, underwater lights and camera • Actively participate in monthly safety drills
2. Expeditions • Prepare vessel for upcoming expeditions, including trip planning, provisioning and system and safety checks • Make reservations for dockage, customs and fueling as necessary • Participate as crew team member during the expedition, which includes watches while underway, sharing galley and cooking duties and supporting ongoing research activities onboard • Prepare dive gear and support dive operations when required • Perform watches at anchor and in port as required • Assist with dockage, lines, ground tackle and fenders upon arrival and departure from dock or anchorage • Run vessel or tender when required • Be aware of and abide by all USCG and foreign country regulations and laws
3. Vessel management • Schedule and supervise contractors as requested • Assist Captain to keep vessel documentation and system manuals current and organized onboard • Participate in ANGARI Foundation’s random drug testing program
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • Captain’s license, OUPV or greater (current) • STCW and first aid certification (current) • Advanced Open Water SCUBA certification • Self-starter 515 N. Flagler Drive, Suite 350 West Palm Beach, FL 33401 www.angari.org • Can-do, positive attitude • Good communicator and team player • Strong organizational skills • Meticulous attention to detail • Ability to work onboard U.S. flagged vessel, U.S. passport holder • Fluently speak and write in English • Not prone to seasickness • Physical abilities: lift at least 60 lbs.; open and close watertight hatches and doors; move around and maintain balance on a rocking vessel; sit and stand for extended periods of time; climb up and down steep ladders and stairs; step over high sills; work in hot and/or wet conditions for several hours
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • Rescue or Instructor SCUBA certification • 100 Ton or greater license (current) • Interest/experience in marine and/or environmental science, film and exploration • Experience with drones, including an FAA drone license • Experience with above and below water camera equipment
Home Port and Crew Housing: North Palm Beach, FL is home port when not traveling (traveling will include U.S. East Coast, Gulf of Mexico and northern Caribbean). The mate will be given the option of residing at the Foundation’s shared crew apartment when at home port and not traveling onboard the research vessel. Food, toiletries and personal items are not supplied for the crew apartment.
Hours: When in home port, the crew member is expected to be on duty Monday through Friday, 8am until 4:30pm, unless specific request by Captain for extension of service day. When not at home port and/or on expedition, the crew member’s work schedule will be dictated by the expedition and travel requirements as assigned by the Captain.
Compensation and Hiring Details: $3,500 – $4,200 per month paid in arrears. This position is for 12 months with possibility of contract renewal. The crew member will be an independent contractor and receive a 1099. Please note that, while not unheard of, it is rare for crew to earn gratuity onboard research vessels.
