Overview
Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) is an exciting independent research institute that is addressing critical challenges facing our oceans, human health, and the environment through innovative scientific research and education. GMGI is looking for a dynamic, organized, and detail-orientated individual to serve as our Laboratory Manager. As a member of our Research Team, you will be responsible for managing the daily operations and overall safety of our research facility on Gloucester Harbor. The Laboratory Manager will play a vital role in overseeing, maintaining, and improving the function of the lab to support our research goals.
The ideal candidate will have strong leadership and organizational skills, effective communication skills, and excellent teamwork skills to thrive in a collaborative and dynamic work environment.
Responsibilities
- Implement and enforce laboratory operation policies to support research with the highest standards of quality, reproducibility, and safety
- Maintain laboratory equipment and oversee service contracts and equipment repairs
- Train personnel on the proper use of equipment
- Maintain laboratory supplies and inventory; place and receive orders for supplies and equipment; manage payments with office personnel, and track spending related to lab management
- Serve as the main contact for equipment and supply vendors
- Coordinate biological and hazardous waste removal and maintain product recycling programs
- Assist with shipping related to research projects
- Oversee the operation of GMGI’s seawater facility
- Lead efforts to establish the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
- Organize required lab inspections by local, state, and federal agencies
- Assist with space planning for research labs and equipment as GMGI grows
- Contribute to capital grants to raise funds for new equipment and lab build out
- Identify opportunities to increase efficiency and sustainability of the lab environment
Safety:
- Develop and implement lab safety protocols and procedures in compliance with local, state and federal regulations and train personnel according to these standards
- Lead institutional safety committee, organize quarterly meetings and maintain meeting minutes
- Maintain an accurate chemical inventory and safety data sheets (SDS)
- Regularly inspect safety features (e.g. eye wash stations, safety showers, fire extinguishers)
- Maintain current RCRA training and DOT awareness training
- Lead the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and act as the liaison between GMGI and the Gloucester Board of Health
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, in Biology, Biotechnology, or related field
- Knowledge of good laboratory practice and two or more years of lab operations experience
- Knowledge of laboratory safety policies and procedures
- Knowledge of IACUC guidelines and regulations
- Knowledge of standard molecular biology procedures and equipment (e.g. DNA sequencers, thermocyclers, robotic workstation, bioanalyzer, spectrometer, fluorescent microscope)
- Knowledge of aquaria maintenance is desired
- Excellent communication skills and ability to provide effective technical instruction to members of staff
- Excellent organization skills and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent writing and documentation skills
- Self-starting, independent, creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills
- Excellent teamwork skills for success in a collaborative and dynamic environment
This position will report to the Science Director.
Salary commensurate with experience.
