Coral Gardeners is a mission-driven organization founded in 2017 by a group of young surfers and freedivers from Mo’orea. Witnessing the decline of their home reef, they came together to make a difference. Today, we are an international collective committed to revolutionizing ocean conservation and saving coral reefs.

Position Overview
Under the supervision of the Coral Restoration Manager, the Coral Gardener plays a key role in maintaining and restoring corals in Coral Gardeners’ nurseries. This includes both land-based and underwater restoration activities, following strict protocols to ensure coral growth, resilience, and survival. The role also involves scientific data collection, equipment maintenance, and contributing to public awareness around marine conservation.

Key Responsibilities

1. Preparation and Maintenance of Infrastructure

  • Prepare nursery structures (e.g., cutting and shaping metal bars, installing anchors, prepping ropes)

  • Paint, repair, and maintain nursery structures to ensure durability

  • Maintain all restoration-related equipment (boats, tools, ropes, etc.)

  • Monitor and report any repair or replacement needs

2. Coral Restoration Activities

  • Install new nurseries and populate them with collected or transplanted coral

  • Plant corals in nurseries or directly on the reef following restoration protocols

  • Regularly clean underwater nurseries to remove debris or harmful organisms

  • Identify and collect coral fragments for nursery growth or research

  • Conduct dives to identify new restoration sites and monitor existing coral populations

3. Monitoring and Data Collection

  • Collect data on coral health, growth, and environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, salinity)

  • Conduct regular inspections to assess coral resilience and health

  • Take underwater photos to document coral and nursery development

  • Report any anomalies or concerns to the Coral Restoration Manager

4. Outreach and Collaboration

  • Participate in educational activities to raise awareness among the public and partners

  • Work with the team to share best practices and improve restoration techniques

Required Skills and Qualifications

Technical Skills

  • Basic knowledge of coral reefs and restoration techniques

  • Scuba diving experience (PADI or equivalent recommended, but not mandatory)

  • Proficiency with tools and underwater equipment

  • Ability to use measuring tools and take underwater photos for data collection

Personal Qualities

  • Strong motivation and commitment to coral reef and marine conservation

  • Attention to detail and accuracy in following protocols and collecting data

  • Team spirit, independence, and ability to manage multiple tasks

  • Awareness of underwater and operational safety
