The mission of the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release native and migratory wild birds that have been harmed or displaced; to provide or locate humane shelter for those birds that cannot be released; and to educate the public on the importance of coexistence with all wild bird species.
Job Summary
The Avian Care Coordinator assists the Hospital Manager in managing avian emergencies, critical care, and daily husbandry for hospital patients and sanctuary residents. The role involves coordinating rescues, treatments, diet plans, enrichment, and supervising interns. This is a full-time, salaried position that requires availability on holidays, weekends, evenings, and during events.

Key Responsibilities

Ensure compliance with USFWS and FWC permits for bird rescue and rehabilitation.

Administer and oversee medical treatments and care plans.

Perform basic medical procedures such as radiographs, medication dosing, wound care, and humane euthanasia.

Manage internship program: recruitment, interviews, move-in/out, oversight, and evaluations.

Train interns and volunteers in avian care, routine medical tasks, and safety protocols.

Schedule intern shifts and provide after-hours support three days per week.

Oversee animal care and cleaning protocols at both facilities.

Lead enrichment program for non-releasable birds.

Maintain food and supply inventory; communicate ordering needs.

Coordinate with Hospital Manager and Operations Director for patient assessments and releases.

Maintain patient and resident medical records.

Assist in surgeries and in training Avian Ambassadors using positive reinforcement.

Handle emergencies during off-hours.

Engage with other rehab centers and attend training/conferences.

Communicate professionally with the public regarding patients and the sanctuary.

Contribute to FKWBC’s newsletter and e-blasts with content and photos.

Perform other duties as assigned.
Candidate Requirements

Must have or be able to obtain a Florida State Apprentice Rehabilitator’s license.

Familiarity with USFWS standards and regulations.

Minimum two years of wildlife rehabilitation experience, preferably avian-focused.

Experience with glove-trained avian species is preferred.
Qualifications

Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Skilled in capturing, handling, and restraining wild birds.

Knowledge of avian rehab protocols, medical records, and anatomy.

Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

Knowledge of or willingness to learn natural history of native birds.

Self-motivated, disciplined, with excellent time management.

Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
