For Laura, the ocean has always been her calling—a source of inspiration and purpose. Originally from Germany, she’s a designer, ocean advocate, and divemaster whose passion for coral reefs has led her to conservation projects across the globe. Unlike previous generations when ocean conservation was mostly reserved for scientists, explorers, and academics, Laura is living proof that anyone with dedication and a unique skill set can make a meaningful impact. In fact, skills of all kinds are needed more than ever within ocean conservation. With a background in product design, she dedicated her bachelor’s thesis to “Design for Coral Restoration,” crafting ecosystem-aware concepts that highlight how design can drive environmental change.
Laura’s journey in marine conservation includes volunteering with coral restoration initiatives worldwide. In Fiji, she assisted in planning and executing workshops with Corals for Conservation, collaborating with leading scientist Dr. Austin Bowden-Kerby and a project manager to help restore coral ecosystems. Back home in Germany, she worked with Waves of Action, educating young people about coral reefs’ essential role in ocean health and inspiring the next generation to care for these fragile ecosystems. Currently, she’s traveling through Central America, where she connects with coastal communities to support and learn sustainable practices, further expanding her conservation efforts. Laura also volunteers with small local businesses and individuals who live a more sustainable lifestyle, helping them share their stories and practices.
In her professional role, Laura manages social media and communications for Scuba Schools International (SSI)’s Blue Oceans Program. Through SSI, she builds a network of conservation-minded dive centers, encouraging eco-conscious practices and fostering a global community united by a shared respect for the ocean. With her storytelling, photography, and community-building skills, Laura inspires others to appreciate the underwater world and take action to protect it.
Laura’s ultimate goal is to show that anyone, regardless of their background, can contribute to ocean conservation. By merging her design expertise with her passion for the sea, she’s demonstrating that there’s room for everyone in this work, and she encourages youth to step in with their own unique skills, talents, passions, and expertise. Her work continues to inspire a new wave of advocates ready to safeguard our oceans in whatever it is they do best.
