Position Summary:
The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking a Youth Education Aquatics Intern to support climate science, nearshore monitoring, and aquatic natural resources education. This full-time or part-time, exempt position (16–40 hours per week) offers flexible scheduling over a three-month term (June–August 2025).

Interns will collaborate with DNR’s aquatic monitoring staff to develop curriculum, outreach materials, and public engagement strategies on kelp, eelgrass, climate science, and coastal ecosystems. They will also contribute to community science initiatives and educational programming for local youth.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate Educational Programming:
    • Lead learning activities for high school interns in the Climate Resilience Youth Internship (CRYI).
    • Host community events showcasing DNR’s aquatic resources programs.
    • Organize field experiences for students, fostering interest in natural resources careers.
    • Evaluate outreach programming effectiveness, offering insights for improvement.
  • Develop Curriculum & Public Communication Materials:
    • Film and edit “Day in the Life” videos highlighting aquatic careers.
    • Design graphics and interactive materials for public outreach.
    • Create education tools for programs like CRYI and Students in the Watershed.
    • Assist in crafting K-12 curriculum for kelp, eelgrass, climate science, and nearshore monitoring.
    • Contribute to protocol development for community science participation.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Marine Science, Oceanography, Education, or related fields.
  • Valid driver’s license with at least two years of driving experience.
  • Minimum age of 18 at the time of hire.
  • Commitment to safety, diversity, and ethical standards.
  • Strong initiative in learning and applying new concepts.
