Position Summary:
Audubon Florida’s Everglades Science Center (ESC) is a leading ecological monitoring and research station. The Senior Biologist will oversee field research and conservation initiatives, ensuring Audubon’s mission to recover bird populations while preserving vital ecosystems.
The position works on-site, full-time (40 hours/week) and reports to the Director and Principal Scientist at ESC, supporting strategy development, funding acquisition, staff supervision, and stakeholder partnerships.
Key Responsibilities:
- Recruit, train, and mentor field staff, ensuring data collection accuracy and operational efficiency.
- Conduct and oversee biological monitoring of aquatic vegetation, wading bird colonies, and prey fish populations.
- Maintain hydrologic instrumentation in Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, and the Florida Keys.
- Operate SCUBA/snorkeling gear, kayaks, small boats, and motorboats for field research.
- Manage large biological and hydrologic datasets, perform analyses, and derive conservation strategies.
- Write technical reports, scientific manuscripts, grant proposals, and policy documents.
- Secure and maintain fieldwork permits, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Oversee the maintenance and repair of vehicles, boats, and field equipment.
- Assist in grant reporting, budgeting, and financial processes.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree (preferred) in Biology, Ecology, Avian Ecology, or Natural Sciences (exceptional candidates with B.S. and significant experience may be considered).
- 7+ years of field science experience, preferably in marine, estuarine, or wetland ecology.
- 3+ years managing staff and/or volunteers.
- Expertise in Florida estuaries, mangrove forests, and coastal wetlands.
- Experience conducting fish sampling and species identification.
- Proficiency in R and ArcGIS for statistical analysis and mapping.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience engaging with government agencies, academic institutions, and conservation groups.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license and boat operating experience (must acquire relevant boating certifications upon hire).
- Ability to work in challenging outdoor conditions (extreme heat, biting insects, crocodiles/snakes presence).
- Willingness to obtain Helicopter Crew Member qualification within one year.
