Position Summary:
Bayfield County is hiring two Seasonal Invasive Species Interns to conduct watercraft inspections, outreach, and education at boat landings across Bayfield, Ashland, Iron, and Douglas Counties in Wisconsin. This role involves hands-on fieldwork, engaging with residents and tourists to promote awareness of invasive species prevention, and assisting with data entry, outreach programs, and surveys.
Position Details:
- Duration: Between May 30, 2025, and June 7, 2025 (start); Between August 17, 2025, and September 1, 2025 (end).
- Hours per Week: 16–20 hours.
- Schedule: Fieldwork without direct supervision; daily interaction with residents and tourists.
Key Responsibilities:
- Inspect watercraft for invasive species.
- Educate visitors at boat launches through informal conversations and scheduled programs.
- Conduct watercraft decontamination using portable hot water pressure washers.
- Drive a county vehicle to sites, including towing and operating a trailer-mounted power washer.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Self-motivated, responsible, and detail-oriented.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work outdoors in inclement weather.
- Valid driver’s license; reliable and insured vehicle preferred (mileage expenses reimbursed).
Preferred:
- Experience driving a truck and towing/attaching/backing up a trailer.
- Familiarity with aquatic invasive species concepts.
- Experience identifying aquatic invasive species.
