Research Scientist Coral Metapopulation Modeller

Australian Institute of Marine Science

About this exciting opportunity

You will be joining an innovative multidisciplinary team of ecologists, geneticists, oceanographers and habitat modellers to apply (and further develop) a coral metapopulation modelling framework (C~scape) to reefs on the Northwest Shelf of Australia as part of the Ocean Discovery and Restoration (ODR) Program. In this role you will work collaboratively with AIMS scientists in Western Australia and Townsville, to lead the modelling of coral dynamics using data collected from Ashmore and Mermaid reefs. You will synthesise a wide array of different data types into the model to allow investigation of local variations in coral population dynamics across reef seascapes and apply innovative approaches to propagate uncertainty across the modelling framework as well as project future trajectories of the reef system under different climate and management scenarios.

About you

Underpinning your suitability for this opportunity will be your PhD in ecological modelling, mathematics, marine science, environmental science or a similar discipline and postdoctoral experience in statistical analysis and ecological or population modelling. You will have extensive quantitative skills in the analysis of ecological data, including the ability to manage large data and conduct statistical analyses and develop models in the R programming language. You will have proven capability and enthusiasm to tackle complex ecological problems that require bringing together disparate information into a quantitative framework.

You will be a team player with an ability to adapt and accept direction while maintaining a commitment to your quality of work. Ideally you have a strong understanding of the life history and biology of coral populations, including reproduction, larval ecology, recruitment, growth, competition, and mortality.
