Salary/Compensation: $37,782.00 – $66,120.00 annually

Work with the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division performing specialized repair and maintenance work on marine propulsion and operating systems at the Ferry Division Shipyard in Manns Harbor, NC.

Description

This full-time permanent role involves routine and moderate complexity repairs and rebuilds on ferry machinery. Under the direction of a Marine Mechanic Supervisor, you’ll handle diesel engines, gear systems, pumps, shafts, hydraulics, and more.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose, repair, and overhaul diesel engines (valves, pistons, injectors, etc.)
• Service clutches, reduction gears, couplings, and align propeller shafts
• Overhaul pumps (fire, bilge, hydraulic)
• Operate precision shop machinery (grinders, mills, presses, lathes, etc.)
• Interpret mechanical blueprints and conversions (standard to metric)
• Use precision measurement tools: calipers, micrometers, gauges
• Follow strict safety, drug testing, and fitness-for-duty protocols

Minimum Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED
• Three years of progressive mechanical experience with diesel/gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulics, air, or electric systems—preferably in marine repair or shipbuilding
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Understanding of diesel/gasoline engine operation
• Familiarity with reduction gears, hydraulic systems, air/electric controls
• Mechanical diagnostic skills for malfunctioning equipment
