Manta Caribbean Project (Manta Trust)

  • Salary/Compensation: Volunteer position (Cost: USD 1,650 covering housing, field trips, research training, presentations, educational activities, fisheries surveys, and equipment usage.) Does not include flights, food, or personal expenses.

  • Hours per Week: Variable; occasionally long hours, including weekends
  • Education Required: Minimum 18 years old, environmental or conservation-related background preferred
  • Experience Required: Previous environmental or conservation experience strongly preferred, strong swimming/snorkeling skills essential

Essential Functions:

  • Assist in local marine conservation projects involving community outreach, education, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Participate in manta ray research including photo-identification, data collection, and sample handling.
  • Perform fisheries surveys and stakeholder interviews to support conservation objectives.
  • Create educational outreach materials on marine megafauna conservation.
  • Support scientific research activities including data analysis, grant writing, and scientific publications.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age 18, with a passion for marine ecosystems and conservation.
  • Strong swimming and snorkeling abilities.
  • Intermediate English required; Spanish language proficiency advantageous.
  • Comfortable working extended hours, both on boats and at a desk.
  • Proficient computer skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Photoshop, graphs).
  • Creative, enthusiastic, friendly personality able to relate to diverse backgrounds.
  • Comfortable with communal living and collaborative work environments.
  • Must have diving or comprehensive medical insurance.

Working Conditions:

  • Physically demanding role requiring boat-based work in sunny and hot conditions.
  • Shared accommodations provided.
  • Participation in field trips, community projects, and educational activities.

Additional Information:

  • Limited to five participants per program cycle.
  • All participant fees directly support conservation research and operational costs.
