The Surfrider Foundation seeks to hire an individual to coordinate Surfrider’s mangrove nursery in Isabela, Puerto Rico. This position plays a crucial role in the preservation of coastal ecosystems, contributing to both the environment and the local economy through the provision of healthy and sustainable plants.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Planning and organization:
- Develop and execute coastal plant production plans according to restoration projects.
- Establish planting, transplanting, and harvesting schedules.
- Develop an inventory of coastal mangrove species.
- Identify and coordinate seed search.
Cultivation and Maintenance:
- Monitor growing conditions, such as irrigation, fertilization, and pest and disease control.
- Implement appropriate propagation techniques, whether by seed, cuttings or other methods.
- Maintain the nursery at 95% of its full capacity.
Technical Knowledge:
- Apply sustainable and environmentally friendly cultivation practices.
Personnel Management:
- Oversee and train nursery volunteers.
- Ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
Logistics :
- Manage plant inventory and coordinate distribution to events, restoration projects, and other nurseries.
- Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers.
Research and Development:
- Keep current with the latest research and techniques in coastal plant propagation and management.
- Experiment with new species or methods to improve nursery efficiency and sustainability.
Infrastructure Maintenance:
- Oversee the maintenance of nursery facilities, including surroundings, irrigation systems and equipment.
Reports to: Puerto Rico Programs Manager
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Knowledgeable in mangrove planting and restoration of sand dunes and mangroves.
- Have an understanding of local coastal plant species, their specific requirements and their role in the ecosystem.
- Timely and responsible.
- Able to work outside for extended periods of time.
- Available on weekends.
PAY:
This is a part-time/temporary position, which is contingent upon securing continued funding.
The position will be compensated with a salary commensurate with the candidate’s experience level. The Surfrider Foundation offers a salary that is competitive with other national, not-for-profit conservation organizations.

Hourly Rate: $20/Hour
Time Commitment: 5-10 hours/week (averaging 8 hours/week)
