Laboratory Manager

University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV)

  • Hours per Week: Full-time (1.0 FTE)
  • Education Required: Bachelor’s degree in a related scientific field
  • Experience Required: At least five (5) years of progressive experience related to assigned laboratory, including two (2) years in a supervisory role

Essential Functions:

  • Manage operations and research in a scientific laboratory
  • Support faculty and researchers in experimental design and data compilation
  • Organize and edit research data for publication
  • Coordinate equipment purchasing, maintenance, and lab safety
  • Supervise staff including hiring, training, and performance evaluation
  • Assist with seawater systems and equipment including boats, trailers, and propulsion systems
  • Ensure laboratory compliance with university and federal safety protocols

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated leadership in lab management and staff supervision
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory equipment and safety standards
  • Exceptional planning, communication, and organizational skills
  • Familiarity with marine systems is strongly preferred

Working Conditions:

  • Laboratory-based with some travel and weekend duties
  • May include exposure to hazardous materials with appropriate PPE required
  • Requires field readiness, including use of boats and trailer systems
