Position Summary:
NY State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is hiring two seasonal Invasive Species Technicians to support the management, survey, and monitoring of invasive species in the Saratoga-Capital Region. The role also involves stewardship projects, ecological restoration, and database management, making it an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about environmental conservation.
Position Details:
- Duration: May 27, 2025 – November 26, 2025
- Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 A.M.–4:30 P.M. (Weekend work is possible but rare).
- Location: Based out of Saratoga Spa State Park. Travel to nearby parks is required, with a vehicle provided for work-related travel. No overnight stays expected.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist Stewardship staff in planning projects to meet regional goals.
- Survey, monitor, and remove invasive species (terrestrial & aquatic plants, forest pests, pathogens).
- Provide support to field staff and volunteers (e.g., SCA, partners, ECC).
- Collect and manage field data using Survey123, iMap, Field Maps, and standardized methods.
- Maintain project information in statewide databases (ArcGIS, iMap, DESP).
- Respond to statewide Early Detection and Rapid Response needs.
- Perform native plantings and restoration activities.
- Organize and participate in education and outreach events.
- Conduct trainings for regional staff and volunteers in Best Management Practices and iMap Invasives.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Strong organizational skills in field settings.
- Knowledge of GPS/GIS systems and ecological monitoring methods.
- Ability to perform physical work in a range of outdoor conditions while maintaining a positive attitude.
- Passion for environmental stewardship and a team-oriented mindset.
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred:
- One or more years of experience in invasive species identification and control methods.
- Background in forestry, environmental studies, ecology, or natural resources management.
- Experience with backcountry orienteering and Leave No Trace principles.
