Salary: £36,246–£39,942 per annum (annual increments paid each year) / $44,946–$49,531 per year.


Position Summary:
Natural Resources Wales is hiring a Fisheries Biologist to join the South East Environmental Assessment and Advice Team (EAAT). The team provides critical evidence for environmental outcomes in line with statutory and national requirements through terrestrial and freshwater ecology, water quality, and fisheries surveys and investigations.

This full-time, permanent position focuses on monitoring, analysis, and reporting of fish counter data, supporting the development of new counting methods, and delivering high-quality advice to internal and external stakeholders.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and manage the deployment and operation of fish counter equipment, including ARIS/DIDSON installations.
  • Process and analyze fisheries and environmental data to support project objectives.
  • Maintain quality-assured monitoring data in databases while ensuring compliance with UK, European, and NRW standards.
  • Provide technical advice and develop technical reports for operational use, public inquiries, and legal cases.
  • Assist in planning, scheduling, and delivering annual survey and monitoring programs.
  • Develop and implement new fish counting and monitoring methods, collaborating with partners as necessary.
  • Resolve local issues by providing scientific and technical advice on monitoring data.
  • Maintain and procure specialist sampling equipment.
  • Ensure data collection aligns with regulatory requirements and respond to monitoring data requests within deadlines.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Degree or equivalent in biology, ecology, or environmental science.
  • Expertise in fisheries science, ecology, and automated fish counters.
  • Experience analyzing field-based monitoring data, interpreting environmental findings, and reporting results.
  • Strong analytical skills with knowledge of statistics and databases.
  • Excellent report writing, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to perform fieldwork in physically demanding environments.

Preferred:

  • Specific knowledge of fisheries monitoring methodologies.

Welsh Language Level Requirement:

  • Essential: Level A1 – Entry Level (basic phrases and greetings).
