Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) seeks a visionary Development Director to lead our development team, refresh our fundraising strategy, and cultivate new and diverse revenue streams. Position Overview:
The Development Director will play a critical role in expanding financial support from private and public foundations, and development agencies and will spearhead efforts to engage major donors.
The ideal candidate will bring an extensive network within and beyond the environmental conservation sector, with the expertise to tap into new opportunities and secure high-value donations. Key Responsibilities:
Fundraising Strategy and Execution:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy to meet SFP’s annual and long-term financial goals.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts from foundations and development agencies (USAID, UNDP, FAO, GEF, etc.)
- Expand SFP’s donor base by building upon existing, and developing new, revenue streams, including exploring the potential for developing a high-net-worth individual donor program.
Foundation and Agency Relations:
- Build and steward strong relationships with key foundations and development agencies.
- Oversee the preparation and submission of high-quality grant proposals, ensuring alignment with donor priorities and organizational needs.
- Monitor and report on grant compliance and outcomes, working closely with program staff to ensure successful donor stewardship.
Collaboration and Leadership:
- Work closely with the Executive Team and Board of Directors to align fundraising activities with organizational priorities and opportunities.
- Provide leadership and guidance to the Development team, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with leadership and Finance to develop and manage fundraising budgets, ensuring transparency and accountability.
Data and Reporting:
- Utilize donor management systems to track and analyze donor activity, providing regular reports on progress toward fundraising goals.
- Continuously evaluate and refine fundraising strategies based on data-driven insights and donor feedback.
Qualifications:
- Successful track record of developing new revenue streams and securing major gifts from foundations, development agencies, and preferably major donors.
- Preferably, 7+ years of experience in non-profit development, with a focus on international development or environmental conservation desired.
- Preferably 5+ years of experience with a successful track record building and managing teams working collaboratively across an organization.
- Preferably 5+ years of experience with foundation and development (govt) grants.
- Strong understanding of the philanthropic landscape, preferably concerning sustainable development and fisheries.
- Excellent writing, editing, proofreading skills, and the ability to produce high-quality grant proposals and donor communications.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated experience in donor relations, and developing successful fundraising strategies.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with donor management software and other fundraising tools, e.g., Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce, etc.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Compensation: This is an exempt position with a salary range of $150,000 – $160,000 annually.

- $50 stipend per paycheck if medical insurance is not elected
- Monthly internet reimbursement of up to $50
- 20 days of accrued vacation annually, 10 sick days annually, office closure for holidays, and the last week of December (scheduled, but not guaranteed)
- 6-week paid leave of absence for qualified situations
- Sabbatical leave policy in which employees receive a 6-week paid sabbatical leave after 7 years of employment
