The Ocean Cleanup is committed to developing and scaling technology to eliminate plastic waste from the world’s oceans. The Communications Director will amplify the organization’s global impact by shaping its narrative, elevating its brand, and ensuring all communication efforts are aimed at achieving the largest cleanup in history.

This position reports directly to the CEO/Founder of The Ocean Cleanup.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all internal and external communications, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Develop and implement a storytelling strategy to share progress, inspire global support, and mobilize resources.
  • Utilize platforms such as social media, podcasts, and YouTube to amplify the organization’s mission and brand.
  • Protect and enhance The Ocean Cleanup’s brand, ensuring it reflects the mission, vision, and values.
  • Manage and mentor a team of 10-15 communications professionals, fostering collaboration and growth.
  • Oversee content production, including social media, multimedia, copywriting, and media partnerships.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align communication strategies with organizational goals.
  • Build and maintain external relations with individuals, companies, and government stakeholders.
  • Design systems to ensure consistent, high-quality internal communication across departments.

Professional Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in communications, public relations, and branding, with leadership roles.
  • Ability to develop innovative, impactful communication strategies for global reach.
  • Proven success in storytelling, especially in start-up to scale-up organizations, preferably in the environmental/nonprofit sector.
  • Strong management skills, inspiring and mentoring teams in fast-paced environments.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Experience delivering measurable results, such as significant growth in audience engagement and brand visibility.

Additional Details

  • Starting Date: As soon as possible.
  • Work Permit: A valid EU work permit is preferred for this role.
  • Salary: Reflective of a non-profit organization reliant on donations rather than commercial entities.
