Job summary:

The goal of the Associate Consultant, Climate Risks and Opportunities is to support the implementation of international, regional and local projects, the preparation of proposals, and the development of new products and services for the corporate sector as part of South Pole’s Global Climate Risks and Opportunities Practice. This includes a variety of tasks such as research, data analysis, and preparing deliverables and proposals to help corporate clients understand and quantify the impacts of physical climate risks. You will contribute to project teams with medium-sized and large mandates, and will also have the opportunity to manage small projects yourself with the support of senior team members.

Main tasks & responsibilities:

  • Support with or lead on the preparation and completion of deliverables for the corporate sector (companies) on physical climate risks, including both technical and administrative requirements, to the level of quality required by South Pole and the client, for our international, regional and local clients.
  • Develop and execute new methodologies to quantify physical climate risks using climate scenario analysis across physical hazards.
  • Manage small projects, including interacting with the client and the project team.
  • Ensure assigned tasks/projects are delivered on time and within the available budget.
  • Manage project information and knowledge according to our project management best practices.
  • Develop proposals for the corporate sector on climate-related risks in close collaboration with the BD/Key Account Management team and senior consulting professionals to support business development activities for the company.
  • Support with the development and improvement of specialised skills, tools and knowledge linked to the topics and services offered by South Pole.
  • Topics of engagement may include: climate change scenario analysis (in line with disclosure requirements defined by the CSRD, ISSB and/or TCFD); identification and analysis of physical climate risks; and development of business resilience strategies to physical risks.

Requirements:

Essential –

  • University degree, ideally in Climate Science/Environmental Science/Engineering.
  • Experience with Python focussing on data analysis, automation, and integration of geospatial tools.
  • Experience with GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for spatial data visualization, analysis, and mapping.
  • Relevant work experience (the expectation is minimum of 2-3 years) in climate science or a related field, including experience working with companies on climate scenario analysis.
  • Strong analytical skills and mindset.
  • Ability to conduct research tasks, analyse and summarise data.
  • Excellent writing skills in English with proven expertise in creating high-quality written documents (proposals and deliverables).
  • Good project management skills, from both a technical and administrative standpoint, and ability to coordinate project teams in a multi-stakeholder and multi-geographies context.
  • Good stakeholder and client management skills.
  • Good understanding of environmental/climate science and specific consultancy experience in the relevant areas of the practice. Autonomous yet collaborative approach to work.

Desirable –

  • A Master’s degree or wider training in climate science, a sustainability or business/economics/finance-related discipline.
  • Familiarity with physical risks (e.g., climate, environmental, or natural hazards) and their impact, with the ability to model or analyze these risks using geospatial data, and/or practical experience in physical risk modeling.
  • Knowledge of Google Cloud Platform, SQL or BigQuery will be an advantage.
  • Knowledge and/or experience of the agricultural sector, with a focus on crop yield analytics, agronomy, or similar areas related to agricultural productivity and sustainability will be an advantage
  • Good working knowledge of all Google Suite applications and MS Word and Excel.
  • Diligent, reliable, and proactive.
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced international environment. Good prioritisation and time management skills.
