Position Summary:
The Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) is hiring four Aquatic Invasive Species Survey Technicians to join the Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) program.

This role involves fieldwork-based monitoring of Idaho’s waterways to prevent and respond to invasive species. Technicians will work outdoors across some of the most scenic locations in the continental United States, gaining hands-on experience in natural resource management. Ideal for undergraduates or recent graduates, this position offers an excellent start for careers in environmental science.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) surveys using established scientific protocols.
  • Collect plankton samples to detect invasive dreissenid mussels.
  • Survey waterways for aquatic weeds such as Eurasian watermilfoil and flowering rush.
  • Support herbicide treatment monitoring by collecting water quality data (e.g., dissolved oxygen, herbicide residuals).
  • Maintain equipment, including hotwash decontamination units.
  • Perform field tasks such as operating motorized boats, paddling kayaks, snorkeling, and hiking along shorelines.
  • Safely tow and back boat trailers.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to follow biological sampling protocols with attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working in various weather conditions (heat, cold, wind, rain).
  • Ability to perform strenuous manual labor in and around water, mud, and shorelines.
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation.
  • Availability for evening, weekend, and overnight shifts, as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience using GPS for navigation and biological sampling.
  • Background in aquatic biology, ecology, or field inspection.
  • Experience with pressure washers and motorboat operations.
  • Familiarity with plant identification.
  • Previous experience working in water-based environments.
