Guy Harvey, a renowned marine wildlife artist and conservationist, has been a steadfast champion for ocean conservation and its inhabitants. His vision and passion for marine biology led to the establishment of the Guy Harvey Research Institute (GHRI) at Nova Southeastern University in 1999. The institute is a testament to his unwavering commitment to advancing the understanding and conservation of marine ecosystems.

Under the visionary leadership of Guy and GHRI Director Dr. Mahmood Shivji, the GHRI has reached impressive milestones. The institute has deployed 685 satellite tags, including 487 on sharks and 191 on billfishes with assistance from numerous partners. This extensive tracking has yielded invaluable data on fish movement ecology and behavior, contributing to the development of effective conservation strategies. GHRI researchers have made significant contributions to the scientific community, with an impressive 172 published scientific papers. These publications have shed light on critical aspects of marine life, influencing policy decisions and conservation practices worldwide.

GHRI’s research primarily revolves around fish movement ecology, genetic analysis and conservation. By studying the movement patterns and habitat use of various species, the institute aims to develop science-based conservation measures that ensure the sustainability of marine ecosystems. This research is vital in addressing in tackling the challenges marine wildlife face, such as climate change, overfishing, and habitat degradation.

Research forms the backbone of the Guy Harvey Foundation’s educational initiatives, enhancing our understanding of marine ecosystems and inspiring future generations through academic excellence and educational awareness. In collaboration with Florida Sea Grant, the foundation has awarded over $500,000 in scholarships to support students dedicated to marine science and conservation.
