Future-Proofing Our Ocean: How Sustainable Fishing Supports Biodiversity
More Info and Tickets Are Available Here
World Oceans Day (June 8) is a global celebration and opportunity to catalyzes collective action for a healthy ocean. On June 9 the United Nations Oceans Conference will start global discussions about how to protect the future of our oceans. With 38% of global fish stocks overfished, and consumption of aquatic foods continues to rise, sustainable fishing needs to be embedded in those discussions.
Join us on Monday, June 2 for an evening exploring how ocean biodiversity and sustainable fishing practices are shaping the future of our planet. This event brings together leading voices in marine science and sustainable fishing for a dynamic panel discussion about the intersection of sustainable fishing and biodiversity. The event will also launch a new report by the Marine Stewardship Council highlighting sustainable fisheries that are contributing to ocean biodiversity around the world, as well as results from a never-before-seen global survey of ocean scientists.
The briefing, which takes place at the historic National Press Club in downtown Washington, D.C., takes place during the week of Capitol Hill Ocean Week and World Ocean Day to leverage important conversations about the ocean and stress the need for action on securing ocean health.
You will hear from:
- Dr. Beth Polidoro, Research Director, MSC
- Dr. David Shiffman, Marine Conservation Biologist and Science Communicator
- Moderator: Clare Fieseler, Scientist and Journalist a
- Other speakers to be announced
Continue the conversation and connect with others in the ocean community during the networking reception following the panel. Complementary snacks and drinks (cash bar for alcoholic beverages) will be offered.
Event timing: Guests are invited to join us for the briefing or the networking reception, or both. For the briefing, show up at 5pm for the 5:15pm briefing start time, or join us at 6:00pm for the networking reception. The event ends at 7:30pm.
