Egypt is 2022’s top water sports destination, with 743 listed water sports facilities – or 455 options per 1 million tourists.
By considering the number of listed water sports facilities in the world’s 50 most visited countries, Gymcatch, a fitness software system, has found the top active holiday destinations. The study then normalised this by the number of tourists per year, and took into account the average cost per tourist per week, to recommend the best spots for the ultimate water sports holiday.
Coming 2nd in the study for water sport enthusiasts, is Vietnam, with 794 options to choose from. This is an impressive number, but slightly less than Egypt considering choice per tourist, with 307 per one million tourists. In the third position with 705 facilities, is Indonesia, which works out at 251 per one million tourists.
Completing the top five were Brazil in 4th place, with 16,885 options per one million tourists and Belgium in 5th position, with 14,738.
Without taking into account the number of tourists, Thailand and the US came joint the top, with at least 1,000 listed facilities each.
The UK ranked 28th for water sports enthusiasts and offers over 75 listed water sports venues to get stuck into.
The study also examined google search volumes to find the trending destinations. Out of all the 50 countries in the study, watersports in India” had the highest search volume, followed by “watersports in the UK” and “watersports in Ireland”.
When considering water sports facilities, yoga retreats, cycling routes, hiking trails and ski slopes, Australia is 2022’s top active holiday destination, coming top for hiking holidays and scoring in the top 10 countries for the number of water-sports facilities and yoga retreats. Coming 2nd in the study, Brazil scored particularly well for cycling; with the 4th most routes per tourist. Norway ranked 3rd. An alternative to the ski-season favourites, France and Switzerland, Norway offers the 3rd best skiing option for international travellers when considering the length of ski slopes on offer.
Completing the top five were Switzerland in 4th place (which came top for skiing options per tourist) and the United States in 5th position (which came just behind Australia for hiking trails per tourist).
The study can also reveal the best destinations for an active holiday in each continent. Norway is the top destination in Europe. South Africa in Africa, India in Asia, the US in North America and Brazil in South America.

About Gymcatch
Gymcatch is a UK based fitness business booking and management system created to help independent fitness instructors to save time, increase revenue, and to provide a better customer experience. Since its launch in 2017, Gymcatch’s mission has been to increase participation through technology, making finding and booking fitness easier for all. We believe that by making participation easier, people will do more and promote exercise in their community.
Methodology
To put together the tool, Gymcatch collected the data from a variety of different sources including; Bikemap.net, Alltrails.com, Skiresort.info, budgetyourtip.com and TripAdvisor amongst many others. Once all data points were collected the number of estimated tourists (indexmundi.com) was used to normalise the data and ensure that a fair scoring system was put in place to rank the countries in the study.
