Chesapeake Bay Sentinel Site Cooperative (CBSSC) Coordinator position

Maryland Sea Grant (UMCES) is seeking a qualified candidate for our Chesapeake Bay Sentinel Site Cooperative (CBSSC) Coordinator position. This one-year position, with possibility of renewal for a second year, will help lead the Cooperative’s efforts to engage its partners and key stakeholders to maximize understanding and responding to sea level rise in the region in the context of a network of Sentinel Sites in the Chesapeake Bay. The position will expand the efforts of the CBSSC by: 1) building partner relationships across the cooperative; 2) improving mechanisms for data-sharing; and 3) translating CBSSC science to audiences outside of academia. The position leads the CBSSC Management Team which guides the strategic direction of the Cooperative, reviewing and approving Cooperative documents and includes representatives from a majority of the sentinel sites as well as managers and Sea Grant faculty/staff. The position is supported through a grant with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Position Description:

This position would be particularly attractive for individuals interested in facilitating interactions among scientists, resource managers, and communities regarding Chesapeake Bay ecosystem responses to climate change. Part of the work includes the transfer of climate science-related information to a wide range of users and stakeholders in the region. In part, the position is responsible for providing information regarding the impacts of coastal flooding and sea level rise in the Chesapeake Bay region to multiple audiences. It is also responsible for building scientific consensus and collaboration to further understanding of Chesapeake Bay coastal process responding to climate change. The current scientific focus of the CBSSC is on accurate determination of wetland accretion and erosion rates relative to sea level rise. Areas of expansion include community outreach and education and developing collaborative projects to further actionable science to address risks posed by climate change to the Sentinel Site Cooperative.

  • Master’s degree in natural sciences applicable to climate change research.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience or equivalent
  • Experience working on climate change coastal adaptation including sea level rise and coastal flooding.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in locating and analyzing relevant data from various sources (web, state literature, reports, etc.)
  • Experience or training in use of managing datasets, data synthesis and analysis.
  • Experience in working with a diversity of partners.
  • Excellent written and verbal, as well as interpersonal skills.
  • Able to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously, while maintaining focus on the “big picture.”
  • Extremely well organized with great attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint
  • Advanced degree in natural or social sciences or 3 – 5 years experience preferred. • Experience in climate change research.
  • Experience with grant writing.
  • Experience engaging with audiences outside of academia on climate issues.
 
 
 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in synthesizing information and writing.
  • Publication record.
  • The employee will work at the Maryland Sea Grant office in College Park, MD. This position is funded through a grant from NOAA to Maryland Sea Grant, University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. This is a one year, grant-funded position. A one year extension is possible, should funds become available.

Location, Reporting and Duration:

This is a full-time position with benefits. Salary is in the mid-$60,000/year depending on candidates experience and qualifications.
