DESCRIPTION:Date/Time: November 5-7, 2021\nRegistration fee of $25 includes access to all the virtual sessions plus a one-year membership to MAMEA:\nFriday, Nov. 5\n\nWelcome reception and speaker\nOnline social activity\n\nSaturday, Nov. 6\n\nTwo plenary sessions\nThree concurrent session blocks\nMAMEA Business Meeting\nClosing event & online social\n\nOptional Fossil Field Experience\nAn optional in-person field experience will be available Sunday morning, Nov. 7. Registration is $20/person. Field trip is limited to 15 attendees.\nDuring the fossil field excursion, we will be visiting Driftwood Beach, which is a private beach in the Chesapeake Ranch Estates located on the southern end of the world-famous Calvert Cliffs. Participants will learn about the local stratigraphy and understand how it is interpreted by geologists and paleontologists, while having the opportunity to collect fossils for their own personal collections.\nThis section of the Calvert Cliffs exposes the late Miocene St. Marys Formation (~10 – 7.5 million years old), which was deposited when most of Calvert County was a shallow sea. The most common fossils are marine invertebrates, including clams, snails, and burrows. One of the most popular invertebrates to find at Driftwood are Ecphora shells, which are Maryland’s state fossil. You may also find vertebrate fossils from sharks, whales, bony fish, crocodiles, or turtles, as well as fossil plant material, such as wood and pinecones. Interestingly, Driftwood Beach is one of the only sites where you can find fossil starfish along the Calvert Cliffs, although these are fairly rare.\nThe field trip will be led by Dr. Victor Perez, the Assistant Curator of Paleontology at the Calvert Marine Museum. Dr. Perez has been collecting fossils from the Calvert Cliffs for more than 20 years.
